As women approach age 35 and beyond, we can experience a variety of symptoms, some of which are related to declining hormone levels. Hormones are powerful chemical messengers produced by the body that tell your cells what to do, and regulate every organ and major body system. Hormones influence everything from your sleeping habits to your mood, ability to think, stress, cholesterol level, and the rate at which you age.
Most herbal therapies try to rebalance hormonal levels naturally as much as possible. Phytoestrogens are natural plant chemicals that bind to estrogen receptor cells in the body and mimic the hormone's effects. There are several of these chemicals but isoflavones have gained the highest interest. A few studies have documented that women in Asian countries who eat a diet high in soy experienced fewer menopausal hot flashes. Soybeans contain several hormone-like compounds called phytoestrogens. The phytoestrogens in soy appear to help ease menopausal symptoms. There are three primary isoflavones in soybeans: genistein, daidzein and glycitein. In various experiments, isoflavones have showed properties that suggest they help lower the risk of cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis and help relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. Research suggests that the low Japanese breast cancer mortality rate may, in part, be due to the consumption of foods containing soy isoflavones. In addition to breast cancer, soy isoflavones may help reduce the risk of several other types of cancer, including lung, colon and prostate cancer. Japanese women eat on average 2 ounces of soy daily and they do not seem to suffer the same degree of discomfort as western women.
For western women there is the
pharmaceutical hormonal therapy option however many American women are reluctant to use this therapy and search the market for a natural alternative. Soy is a powerful natural alternative plus other health benefits as well. It is also an excellent source of protein. Studies have shown that soy protein can lower high cholesterol.
Red Clover is rich in phytoestrogens. It contains small amounts of silica, choline, calcium and lecithin all very important for normal body functions.
Kudzu has been used in traditional medicine for thousands years to curb alcoholism. This herb contains two phytochemicals, daidzein and daidzin. Both daidzein and daidzin are found in soybeans and are believed to have anti-cancer properties. Interestingly, a Harvard study conducted with hamsters confirmed that compounds found in kudzu, reduced their alcohol consumption.
Black Cohosh is a widely popular herb to help reduce the pain and inflammation of arthritis and to help with women's disorders. Some consider black cohosh as herbal alternative to estrogen replacement therapy and a remedy for PMS.
