Your body is a sophisticated machine that needs fuel to keep it operating at peak performance. It gets its energy from the foods you consume. So whatever you consume plays a vital role when it comes to energy. Many people are uninformed when it comes to a healthy diet therefore make unhealthy food choices which contribute to a lack of energy. A good example of this is consumption of sugar which actually robs us of energy. Americans consume over 150 pounds of sugar annually in one form or another such as candy, soft drinks and others. It is becoming a challenge to find food with no sugar added. The sugar load initially provides a quick energy boost but is followed by a fast decline of energy. That is one of the primary reasons why we feel sleepy after lunch. Processed sugars cause these peaks in our energy levels. In these situations, the solution is a healthy diet high in fruits, veggies, protein, and ample drinks.
Water is paramount to our health and our energy level. Our overall health can be impacted by the amount of water that we drink. A drop of 5% in body fluids will ultimately cause a 25-30% loss of energy in most people. It is recommended to drink eight glasses of water daily. Adequate hydration ensures healthy body function and prevents fatigue.
In order for our bodies to operate at peak performance, it needs high-energy foods. Our food can be further categorized into three major macronutrients: Carbohydrates, Fats, and Proteins.
Some carbohydrates are good source of energy and others can cause imbalances in blood sugar. Whole-grains such as whole-wheat bread or brown rice help with blood sugar levels. Other carbs, such as candy bars, sodas, chips and cookies are simple sugars which are simply empty calories.
There are also different kinds of fats. Oils such as flax seed oil, fish oil, olive oil, and natural oils found in seeds and nuts, are healthy for the body and help to increase energy. Trans fats however, are bad for you, so be sure to read food labels before your consume or prepare food.
Protein is the third macronutrient and very essential for energy production. Lean meat, fish and soy are good sources of protein. Try to stay away from fast foods. Fast foods are packed with calories but are low in nutritional value. When buying meat, stay away from fatty cuts of meat. Cuts labeled loin, tenderloin or sirloin are lean cuts of meat.
Our bodies require a good combination of high-energy foods and adequate hydration to perform our daily tasks.
