Most parents wonder and worry about their little bundles of love and if they need vitamin or mineral supplements. This is a frequent question that often runs through the minds of parents. Typically, infant vitamins supply 400 IU of vitamin D. 400 IU of vitamin D is also found in 33 ounces of infant formula. Once your child is drinking vitamin D-fortified whole milk and drinks at least 17 ounces a day there may not be a need for vitamin D supplementation.
Another important supplement to keep in mind is fluoride. It is a mineral that helps strengthen teeth and it is recommended for all babies 6 months and older who drink only bottled or filtered water that doesn't contain additional fluoride. Use tap water for drinking or mixing with formula that contains less than 0.3 parts per million of fluoride.
